Mickey and his dad Wayne have always raised livestock on the side, but the introduction of the Boer goat to the industry opened up a whole new opportunity for them and other goat raisers. In the early 1990’s the Vick family was raising a few head of cattle, sheep, and goats while also maintaining their position as owner/operators of an apartment complex in San Angelo. They have since sold the apartments and now devote their time to raising quality show goats and farming. By 1995 Wayne and Mickey began purchasing fullblood and percentage Boer bucks and does and infusing those genetics into their Spanish/Nubian cross herd. This particular venture showed so much promise that all of the cattle and sheep were sold off shortly thereafter. As meat goats began being introduced into stock shows across the state they saw a new direction to go with their goats.

It was a difficult industry to dive into in the beginning, but after Mickey’s son, Dustin and daughter, Whitney began having some success in the show ring the phone started to ring a little bit more for Vick Show Goats. Through the years, the Vick family has been able to sell their goats to reputable feeders and have seen their goats continue to compete with some of the best at both the local county shows and at the majors.

Mickey and Dustin are the primary operators of Vick Show Goats today; a herd that consists of over 450 does. After high school, while attending Angelo State University, Dustin has become increasingly more involved in the management and selection processes that go along with an operation such as this. He regularly tends to the entire herd on a daily basis as well as getting the wethers in shape for the sales as Mickey and Wayne tend to the farming and irrigating. As in any family farming and ranching operation, all the duties must be shared, as graduate school now occupies a large portion of Dustin’s time.
